The Political Action Committee of the Illinois Nurses Association today announced its endorsement of U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders (I.-Vermont) for democratic presidential nominee. INA had endorsed U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren last week, but after she announced her withdrawal from the race, the INA Political Action Committee took another endorsement vote.

“The Illinois Nurses Association thanks Senator Warren for a trailblazing campaign that elevated patient care issues and fought for the policies that would guarantee the quality care every person deserves,” said Paul Pater, RN, chair of the INA-PAC and nurse at the University of Illinois Hospital in Chicago. “In the spirit of continuing the fight for the progressive ideals embodied by Senator Warren, we are proud to endorse Senator Bernie Sanders for President. We are steadfast in our resolve to act as patient advocates and will continue to push for the policies that will deliver the best outcomes for our communities. Bernie’s leadership on safe staffing exemplifies the campaign’s motto of ‘Not me, us’ and underscores his commitment to securing the quality care we fight for every day”

The INA-PAC, governed by a six-member board of trustees, endorses political candidates, makes contributions to political campaigns, and educates nurses about political action. As part of the primary and general election process, INA invites all state, federal and presidential candidates to answer a questionnaire so the nurses can assess which candidate best aligns with the values and goals of the association.

The Illinois primary election is Tuesday, March 17.
