Nurses at St. Joseph’s Medical Center File Class Action Lawsuit Against Prime Healthcare and Ascension for Distress Caused by Unsafe Staffing
Nurses at St. Joseph’s Medical Center, represented by the Illinois Nurses Association, have filed a class action lawsuit against Ascension Healthcare and Prime Healthcare for inflicting severe emotional distress by chronically understaffing the hospital. Due to the hospital’s ongoing refusal to meet safe nurse-to-patient ratios, nurses have suffered significant burnout, fatigue, and damage to their mental and physical health.
Nurses Sound the Alarm about the Future of St. Joseph’s Medical Center under New For-Profit Owner, Prime Healthcare
The future of St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Joliet is in danger, according to registered nurses (RNs) at the hospital who are represented by the Illinois Nurses Association (INA). At a press conference on May 4, the nurses demanded accountability and answers for why the company has repeatedly cut services and implemented unsafe staffing changes since acquiring St. Joseph’s in March of 2025.
